Any parent who has had to deal with a child in the throes of an asthma attack knows how scary it can be. If you are noticing that your child is having difficulty catching their breath, complains of chest tightness, or wheezes when breathing then it’s important that you bring them in to see our Milwaukee, WI pediatricians Dr. Sandra Arce-Garzon and Dr. Sergio Casaclang for treatment as soon as possible.

Treating Childhood Asthma

Asthma is one of the most common respiratory conditions to affect children. Our Milwaukee children’s doctors can work with you to create a comprehensive action plan to reduce the severity and frequency of your child’s symptoms. Asthma can be managed by following these rules:

  • Identify and avoid triggers that make asthma symptoms worse (e.g. cold weather, smoking).
  • Work with our pediatricians to create a treatment plan and then make sure you and your child stick with it. If something isn’t working, let us know.
  • Know the warning signs of a flare-up or attack.
  • Follow all medications exactly as prescribed. If you have questions don’t hesitate to ask us.
  • Know when you need to bring your child in for immediate or emergency medical care.
  • Monitor your child’s symptoms and use a peak flow meter to track airflow.

Even with the proper lifestyle modifications in place, your child will still need to use medication every day in order to reduce airway inflammation to help them breathe better. There are two common medications prescribed to children with asthma:

Long-term maintenance medication: This inhaler is used everyday to help control your child’s symptoms by targeting and reducing inflammation of the airways. This medication won’t stop an attack but it can reduce symptoms that could potentially lead to an attack.

Quick-relief medication: This medication is used only when your child first experiences the warning signs of an attack. Keeping an asthma diary is important to be able to determine the beginning stages of a flare-up so that your child can use their fast-acting medication to prevent a full-blown attack.
